Afrissippi to Bring Blues and West African Sounds to Hush Puppy’s Season Finale at Rail Spike Park
Hush Puppy Music Co-op is wrapping up its second season with a one-of-a-kind musical experience this Sunday, October 27, 2024, at Rail Spike Park in Greenwood, MS. Headlining the evening is Afrissippi, a four-piece band that blends traditional Mississippi blues with the vibrant rhythms of Senegal, West Africa. The show is free and will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Rail Spike Park pavilion.
Afrissippi, founded in 2003 by Senegalese Fulani griot Guelel Kumba, creates a powerful fusion of cultures and sounds. The band includes Eric Deaton, Kinney Kimbrough, and Justin Showah, who described his first encounter with Afrissippi’s music as an experience that “hit me like a ton of bricks.” Together, they blend the storytelling traditions of West Africa with the raw, soulful energy of Mississippi blues.
Co-founder of Hush Puppy, Dan Splaingard, admits he's eager to witness the band live. "I've heard a lot of good things about them," he shared. "From what I've heard, I really like the sound that they have, and I think it'll be a fun type of music to bring."
In addition to Afrissippi, Greenwood’s own Redroot Revival will open the show. This local four-piece band is composed of high school musicians, adding a fresh and youthful energy to the evening. “We’re always looking to highlight local talent,” said Splaingard. “Celebrating these young musicians is a great way to close out the season.”
As Hush Puppy Music Co-op concludes its second season, co-founders Splaingard and Scott Barretta are already looking ahead. They plan to announce the lineup for the third season later this fall.
Come out to enjoy the unique sounds of Afrissippi and support local talent at this free, family-friendly event. It’s the perfect way to end an incredible season of live music in Greenwood!
