Blues and Americana Take the Stage at Hush Puppy Music Co-op’s Thursday Concert

Hush Puppy Music Co-op is bringing another exciting night of live music to Greenwood this Thursday, October 26, 2024, with its fifth show of the season. The event will take place at Old City Hall, 121 Main St., and promises a dynamic mix of Americana and authentic blues.

The evening kicks off at 7 p.m. with the Delta String Band from Greenville. Known for their blend of Americana in the tradition of Ralph Stanley, John Prine, Johnny Cash, and the Grateful Dead, the Delta String Band has a reputation for delivering soulful performances.

Headlining the night is Bentonia blues legend Jimmy “Duck” Holmes, taking the stage at 8 p.m. Holmes is a master of the Bentonia-style blues, a unique tradition passed down through blues greats like Henry Stuckey, Skip James, and Jack Owens. Holmes is known for keeping this blues tradition alive at his store in Bentonia, a beloved hangout spot for locals and blues fans alike.

Hush Puppy co-founder Dan Splaingard describes Holmes as the last in a line of Bentonia bluesmen, and his performances are steeped in a deep musical heritage. "He brings something truly special to the stage," Splaingard shared. "This is a rare opportunity to hear authentic Bentonia-style blues."

If you want to hear more about Thursday's show and the story behind Hush Puppy Music Co-op, you can catch the recent interview with Splaingard and music historian Scott Barretta on Mississippi Public Broadcasting's Mississippi Arts Hour. They discuss how the co-op came to be, with Splaingard admitting his fondness for hush puppies—hence the name of the organization!

Admission to the concert is $10 per person, with free entry for kids, making it a family-friendly event. Hush Puppy also offers a $50 annual membership, which includes entry to five concerts and an invitation to the co-op's Christmas party.

Join us for an unforgettable night of live music, where the sounds of Americana and Bentonia blues will fill Old City Hall. Everyone is welcome!
